    After a Year of Ownership

Hi - I wanted to return and give my impressions after a year of using my SnS Deluxe Kamado. My kamado is still in perfect condition after regular year-round use. I've cooked everything from pork shoulder at 225 to pizza at 700+. I haven't really used the slow-n-sear insert in it yet, as that seems to live in my kettle, but I'll be sure to give it a try at some point. I'm very happy with how easy it is to control temps with this kamado. In the past week, I cooked my Thanksgiving turkey in it at a steady 325 for just over 5 hours. It had plenty of room for an 18 pound bird under the dome. I then smoked some jerky my son made out of Canada Goose breast at 200 degrees for a couple of hours. Once you've familiarized yourself with the vent settings for various temperatures, the kamado just sets there and does its thing. I have a thermostatic fan controller that I've used for longer cooks, but I think I could get by without it. The longest cook I've done was an enormous pork shoulder that took 19 hours - I didn't wrap it and it took forever to get through the stall. I only had to add charcoal once during that whole cook. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Everything in the package is top quality. The stainless grills and accessories are still as new - so much better than the nickel-plated mild steel you get from some other manufacturers. I'm happy to recommend the kamado from SnS to anyone.

    Great Customer Service!

I had a grill shipped and it was cracked at the bottom when I received it, most likely due to shipping. My wife emailed the company the second she saw it and they sent me a whole new grill! I did not expect the level of care and immediate attention that they exhibited! I don’t ever plan on getting another grill. But if I did I would buy from them again because I know that this company and products are high quality.

    Outstanding flavor and texture

I purchased the deluxe Kamado grill in August 2020 and picked it up at the shipping company instead of waiting for the white glove delivery after the Labor Day weekend. I have waited to post a review because I wanted to use the grill to ensure the product does what I expected before making a recommendation. I originally purchased the grill with the Maverick XR Pro thermometer and case, cherry picker and grill cover after listening to a good friend carry on about his Kamado Joe and extensive ribbing about the Traeger I purchase the previous year. I later purchased the ash basket bundle (ash basket, divider and ash can) based on his recommendation and subsequently the plancha along with a couple instant read thermometers. I want to preface this review with my opinion that a satisfying meal requires both flavor and texture and I could not achieve the latter with the Traeger which is why I purchased the SNS Kamado. I have cooked steaks, tri-tip, chicken wings, pork butt, chuck roast numerous times over the past year with various wood chips or chunks using both briquette and lump charcoal. I have to say that I am impressed with the flavor achieved with the turbo slow cooking method that produces a clean and distinctive wood flavor as a result of the higher temperatures in addition to the texture of the meat with the reverse sear using the cold grate method. I wasn’t not overly impressed with the ash basket fit in the SNS because it extends above the ceramic that holds the grate and the heat deflector. I initially contacted customer service and inquired about returning it for refund. I never sent the ash basket back but I didn’t foresee using it for cooking in the Kamado setup because the SNS configuration works perfect for my tastes as well as friends and family. The Ash Can works great and I highly recommend that product for quick clean out of the ashes using an old paint brush to sweep the ashes into the can after the coals are dead. The Maverick XR Pro thermometer range is outstanding and worked while I was 300 ft away at the barn during a low and slow cook of a pork butt. The ThermoPro thermometer I have lost communication before I even made it to the barn. The instant read thermometers have also worked very well. The plancha was seasoned with three coats of Blackstone griddle seasoning before first use and works great for preparing breakfast burritos and smash burgers with grilled onions. Placing the SNS basket with lit charcoal on one side allows for cooler areas on the opposite side to keep the cooked food warm until ready to serve. Using the plancha in a kamado setup with the fire directly below the plate heats the entire plate which is great for seasoning but not for cooking because there is no place to retreat if it is too hot.

    Extremely versatile

I wanted a kamado because of the versatility; they can smoke, then can grill, they excel at roasting, etc. I chose this kamado in particular because I wanted a larger-than-normal (read: > 18") kamado, and I loved using the Slow N Sear. Given the versatility and the price, I couldn't pass it up. I have owned this cooker a little over a year now, as I ordered it September 26, 2020. I'll begin with the negatives. The gasket around my bottom intake vent was applied slightly crooked, so there's a small air gap at one of the corners. I contacted SnS Grills about it, and they sent me some sealant to seal the gap, as well as a new gasket if I wanted to redo it, and some SnS Grills grill gear (gloves, spatula, tongs, fork, probably something I'm forgetting) for the inconvenience. I still haven't redone that gasket, as the bottom vent seems sealed on at the top and I'm afraid I'd mess it up if I took the bottom vent off to reach the gasket. This doesn't seem to have affected temperatures much if any - if anything temperatures behave the opposite way I'd expect. With an air gap, I would expect increased airflow, so temps would be higher than normal... but if anything I have to open my vents higher than I expected to based on videos I've seen of cooks done on this thing, but once I get it dialed in it's pretty damn stable, even in Turbo Slow mode. This one's not really SnS Grills' fault, but I have both a FireBoard Blower fan and a BBQ Guru fan with the kamado adapter, but I haven't been able to attach either adapter to the intake vent on this. The BBQ Guru plate is too big; I even had someone grind it off some but it was still too big. You can cut off enough to make it fit, as Phil N Florence did so, but it would be nice if the vent was more "standard" I guess. I've heard SnS Grills is working on their own controller, so hopefully they'll make an adapter for existing fans that can mount on this cooker without issues. Now for the positives. Basically everything else. Assembling the cradle was easy and didn't take me long. Installing the kamado in the cradle took a couple of extra bodies, but that's normal given the size and weight. The things I cook the most on here are relatively thin (1" - 1.5") cuts of meat, like burgers, chicken *******, chicken thighs, chicken drumsticks, steaks, pork **** slices, etc. For these, I cook indirectly using the Slow N Sear setup, usually at dome temps around 400 (though I do cook steak at 225 for a reverse sear), cooked indirectly before searing. For steak, the cold grate technique works amazingly well, but since I've done a low and slow cook, lighting up most of a chimney just for the sear seems wasteful, so lately I've taken to just searing steaks with the Su-V Gun, and it seems to do a good enough job I can't justify the additional charcoal use, since Fogo is expensive. I typically only use the traditional kamado setup with heat deflector when I need the full space, though lately I've taken to grilling burgers directly over a fire built this way. I have the cast iron drip n griddle which I think will do better for burgers, but I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to sand the rough surface down before seasoning it, as I tend to hate rough cast iron. As for smoking, I've done plenty of ribs and Boston Butts, and I did my first ever brisket overnight two nights ago. I've never eaten brisket before so I don't have anything to compare it to, but the result looked and tasted great to me. It seems my review is limited to 5 photos, which is a real bummer, as I have LOADS of pictures of things I've cooked on this.

    Fantastic Smoker

This kamado is unbeatable. I've used a number of these smokers before, and could never bring myself to pull the trigger on owning one myself. I'm so thankful I did - it is built so well, comes with everything you could possibly need. The build is sturdy, hinge is solid, and the cradle is one of the better ones out there. As you'd expect from a ceramic kamado, the heat retention is great. But even better is the clean smoke - I expected the SNS to be practical but a bit of a gimmick, and figured I'd end up using this as a normal kamado with my coals at the bottom (which is still an option for when I want the whole grate), but after giving it a try I'll be using the SnS setup 9/10 times. With the water as a heat sink, I was reading a perfect 250 in the offset zone on the border, and about 240 on the far side. Very impressed. My one complaint is the side tables, which are fine when they're up, but the bolt head is a little too small and so they slip out of the brackets when I'm moving them from the down to up position and back. A very small complaint, and still deserving of a 5 star from me. This is the best Kamado on the market right now, between it's large surface area and modular functionality. Good job SnS.
